CHICAGO and NEW YORK – Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP is pleased to announce that leading financial services attorneys Guy C. Dempsey Jr. and Maureen C. Guilfoile have joined the firm as partners. Based in Chicago, Ms. Guilfoile was most recently a director and senior counsel at Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith Inc. Mr. Dempsey joins Katten’s New York office from Latham & Watkins LLP, where he was co-chair of the Derivatives Practice Group. These additions, along with the June hire of New York-based partner Ricardo Hollingsworth, advance the Financial Services Practice’s strategy of expansion through high-level lateral recruiting in areas of growing market demand.
“The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act sets the framework for a new regulatory paradigm that affects every aspect of the financial services industry,” said Arthur W. Hahn, national chair of Katten’s Financial Services Practice. “We are excited to offer our clients the services and additional value that attorneys of Maureen’s and Guy’s exceptionally high caliber and profile are able to provide. The deep knowledge of securities and derivatives that Maureen brings from her years as a senior in-house lawyer for major brokerage firms and Guy’s substantial derivatives and bank regulatory expertise further enhance the strength of our Financial Services Practice, allowing us to serve our clients better as we work with them to meet the challenges and grasp the opportunities the Dodd-Frank Act presents.”
Having earned the respect of clients, colleagues and peers alike over the course of a 30-plus-year career, Mr. Dempsey represents financial institutions in capital markets transactions, with particular experience in over-the-counter and exchange-traded derivatives across all asset classes, as well as governance, compliance, regulatory and litigation issues associated with such products. He has advised a number of clients on derivatives issues and disputes arising from the Lehman bankruptcy. Mr. Dempsey was formerly a managing director at Barclays Capital, where he held several senior positions, including General Counsel for the Americas. Mr. Dempsey earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his J.D. from New York University School of Law.
Ms. Guilfoile is highly regarded and well recognized throughout the financial services industry, having held senior management-level positions at a number of the nation’s most prestigious financial institutions. As director and senior counsel at Merrill Lynch, Ms. Guilfoile had primary responsibility for legal matters within several divisions of the firm, including the institutional and professional futures clearing and execution, futures operations, and exchange floors divisions. Previously, Ms. Guilfoile served as senior vice president and general counsel to ABN AMRO Execution and Clearing Services and as assistant general counsel to The Chicago Corporation. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and her J.D. from DePaul University College of Law.
