New York partner Alan Brudner, chair of the Bioethical Issues Committee of the New York City Bar Association, had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Kenneth Prager, director of Clinical Ethics at Columbia University Medical Center, about ethical issues in health care arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion was featured in the Bar Association’s 44th Street Podcast. The focus was on the allocation of scarce medical resources in the face of significantly increased demand caused by the onslaught of patients in the pandemic. The talk also touched on issues of fairness in allocation decisions, the efficacy of resource allocation policies and triage guidelines, and legal immunity for health care professionals and others involved in patient care decisions and activities in the course of this crisis.
