Chicago Private Credit associate Erica Yang was featured in a news article on Chicago Volunteer Legal Service's website about the legal support Lawyers Helping Our Community (LHOC), a legal clinic Erica co-founded in 2020 to provide free legal services to Chicago's Chinatown community, provided to a client that had been involved in a car accident in 2017 and suffered major health problems in 2019 that impeded his ability to make monthly payments to the other driver's insurance company. The client owed around $16,000, and while he initially was able to meet his monthly payments, he had to be hospitalized for his health problems and lost his job when the COVID-19 pandemic began, almost becoming homeless before eventually finding temporary, part-time employment. The client was unable to keep up with his payments, and, burdened by debt and medical conditions, his mental health started to deteriorate.
LHOC met with the client remotely. Erica negotiated with the collection agency to reduce the client's remaining balance, while Weizi Zhang, an attorney from Paul Hastings LLP, counseled the client on services available to him and his eligibility for federal and state benefits. The client was grateful for LHOC's assistance.
