Chinatown is one of many neighborhoods in the city of Chicago that has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Chicago Commercial Finance associate Erica Yang and Eric Zhi, a real estate associate at Kirkland and Ellis, wanted to help address the economic and health impacts of the coronavirus pandemic in Asian American communities and partnered with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services to create the Lawyers Helping Our Community (LHOC) Clinic.
The LHOC clinic assists non-English speaking members of the Chinatown community, including small business owners, with legal issues related to the coronavirus. Both attorneys like Erica and student translators are helping clients remotely in an easily accessible format.
"The legal needs of low-income and vulnerable residents in minority communities have drastically increased amid this difficult time. As lawyers, we have the privilege to amplify those who are voiceless and to help those who are otherwise helpless," Erica said.
