About Gavin Scotti

Gavin Scotti focuses his practice in the areas of real estate finance, leasing and development. He represents institutional lenders, property developers and industrial development agencies. His previous experience working at the New York City Housing Authority has given him valuable insights into the challenges of deals involving affordable housing, as well as working with city and state agencies.

Considering a deal from both sides can proactively prevent problems

Gavin looks at deals from the other side's point of view in order to anticipate possible questions or objections. Then he can and address these issues proactively rather than reactively. He also provides suggestions on how to streamline and improve form documents to make them easier for clients to understand. Gavin feels that legal documents should be designed to protect a client's interests and provide clear guidelines for how the parties to a deal should proceed in various situations.

Ideally, when the deal is concluded, all parties should agree that the desired outcome has been achieved. They should also feel that they have been treated fairly and that the deal was closed on time and at a reasonable cost.

Prior to joining Katten, Gavin was an attorney in the Law Department – Real Estate and Economic Development division of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). In this role, he negotiated development agreements in connection with land dispositions, as well as commercial and community facility leases at numerous housing developments throughout New York City.
