A Katten team led by Sports and Sports Facilities Partner and Co-Chair Daniel Render acted as legal advisor to Blue Owl HomeCourt Partners' fund (HomeCourt), a division of Blue Owl's GP Strategic Capital platform in connection with its purchase of a minority stake in the Cleveland Cavaliers. HomeCourt, which partnered with the NBA in 2020 to explore investment opportunities with its teams, acquired equity interests in the Cavaliers and their accompanying assets.
The transaction includes Rocket Arena, the Cavaliers' downtown arena, and Cleveland's expansion WNBA franchise, which is set to begin play in 2028. Dan Gilbert, principal owner of the Cavaliers and chair of parent company Rock Entertainment Group, will retain majority ownership in the Cavaliers and the WNBA team.
The Katten team also included Transactional Tax Planning Partner Valentina Famparska, and Sports and Sports Facilities Associate Ethan Asofsky.
