THE CRANE CENTRE

Katten represented The Crane Centre, a Michigan nonprofit founded more
than 20 years ago to create a hospitality school in Uganda, to transfer its
assets to Ugandan ownership. In collaboration with our New York and London
offices, a trio from Chicago worked with the school’s leadership team and
Ugandan counsel to create a Ugandan nonprofit that the school’s assets could
be transferred to. The Chicago team, including Janet Goelz Hoffman, Private
Wealth Associate Katie Keating and Real Estate Associate Katie Ward,
advised on the tax, state nonprofit, estate planning and real estate consider-
ations, while securing approvals from the Uganda Embassy, the Michigan
Department of State and the US Department of State, supported by two sum-
mer associates from Washington, DC, Nanjibah Khan and Leigh Anne Reuter.

          DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OUTREACH (DVO)

A Chicago team including Austin Brandenburg and Financial Markets and Funds
Associates Jordan Schwartz and Jack West completed the federal tax-exempt pro-
cess for DVO in just nine months, working seamlessly with the DVO team on what
was Austin’s very first pro bono matter. DVO addresses domestic violence in the
Chicago community by providing counseling, legal help, emergency shelters, clergy
and parish training, and relationship and prevention education for teens.

          G4 ALLIANCE (G4)

Chicago Health Care Associate Daniel Walbright, who serves as general counsel to
the G4 Alliance, has provided comprehensive pro bono support by revising bylaws
and internal policies, advising on election procedures and safeguarding the organiza-
tion’s 501(c)(3) status, enabling G4 to effectively carry out its mission of increasing
access to safe, essential and timely surgical, obstetric, trauma and anesthesia care
to the poorest communities around the world. Transactional Tax Planning Partner
Valentina Famparska, also from Chicago, and New York Corporate Partner Michelle
Gyves have assisted Daniel with answering legal questions from the client.

          THE GLEANING PROJECT

Chicago Capital Markets Associate Delaney Battle partnered with The Gleaning
Project to draft and adopt revised bylaws and governance documents and compile
the materials needed to obtain federal tax-exempt status and meet New York require-
ments, helping the organization build compliant governance and advance its mission
          for under-resourced artist apprentices.
