HUNTERS CMT4B3 RESEARCH FOUNDATION (FOUNDATION)
New York Private Wealth Partner Cynthia Reed Altchek and Intellectual Property
Partner Sean Wooden, Washington, DC, have provided ongoing pro bono counsel to
the Foundation, helping it secure nonprofit status and navigate regulatory require-
ments, and tailoring research agreements to safeguard intellectual property and
commercial interests. Katten’s support enabled the Foundation to fundraise, part-
ner with leading institutions and help launch the Chua Lab at Johns Hopkins
University, which will significantly advance research toward treatments and cures
for CMT4B3, a rare neuromuscular disease.
ILLINOIS PUBLIC HEALTH INSTITUTE (IPHI)
A Katten team led by Dallas Health Care Counsel Lisa Prather supported IPHI and
its new entity, the Chicago Regionwide Community Information Exchange (CRCIE),
by advising on data privacy concepts and preparing template participation docu-
ments for community organizations to engage in the exchange. Her work enabled
CRCIE to facilitate secure communication among service providers and individuals,
improving coordination and access to essential services. Delaney Battle, Daniel
Walbright, Janet Goelz Hoffman and Chicago Corporate Associate Kyle Warbinton
also supported this matter, assisting CRCIE in incorporating, developing governance
documents, applying and achieving federal tax-exempt status, and registering as a
fundraising charity with the Illinois Attorney General.
L-CMD RESEARCH FOUNDATION (L-CMD)
The firm has provided ongoing pro bono support to L-CMD, beginning with Janet
Goelz Hoffman, Chicago, handling incorporation and federal tax exemption in 2020,
with support from Chicago Corporate Paralegal Eileen Downes. Additionally, Lisa
Prather, Chicago Corporate Partner Tanya Curtis, and Intellectual Property Part-
ners Sean Wooden and Christopher Ferenc, both from Washington, DC, negotiated
the foundation’s research agreements with institutions and advised on contracts to
transfer and store biological materials, enabling L-CMD to operate, expand research
partnerships and accelerate progress toward developing a treatment.
LIFE THRU HOOPS
A team from Katten helped Life Thru Hoops hone its mission and achieve tax-
exempt status by amending its governing documents, drafting key company policies
and guiding it through annual filings. Our pro bono support allows the organization
to focus on its mission of partnering with student athletes, parents and professional
athletes to help student athletes make the right decisions that will shape their
futures and careers.
