Dallas Managing Partner Mark Solomon was featured as a guest on the "Drinks With The Deal" podcast hosted by David Marcus. In this episode, Mark and David discussed how family offices have changed over the past generation and how the Dallas economy has shifted since Mark started his practice there in 1985. Mark noted that the economy in Dallas is much more diversified now than it was in the mid-1980s.
On family offices, Mark shared that, initially, many were "almost side investments" but have since institutionalized to compete for private equity investments. "Over time, they found that if they were going to compete for private equity investments, they had to compete for talent; they had to be institutionalized in how they compensated individuals and how people moved up," Mark said. He added that one of his larger clients is a family office that operates like a private equity firm but benefits from not having definitive hold periods.
