In an interview with Texas Lawyer, Kevin said the move to Katten provided him with a compelling opportunity for his clients and will enable him to grow his estate planning and tax practice. Katten's strong private wealth practice, led by national chair Joshua Rubenstein, was a draw.
"Private wealth is about 10 percent of the firm's headcount. It's rare to have such a focus on private wealth," said Kevin, whose clients include ultra-high-net-worth individuals and their private enterprises, family offices and fiduciaries in the US and abroad.
Law360 Tax Authority noted Katten's growing presence in Texas, with some 60 attorneys across several practice groups. The ability to turn to Katten colleagues outside his primary practice area is a key benefit to clients who need help in other areas, Kevin explained.
Kevin also emphasized that private wealth is a longstanding practice for Katten throughout the country. He told Law360 that there has been a migration of wealth to Texas and Florida over the past few years as wealthy individuals and businesses opted to leave high-tax jurisdictions.
"Private wealth and Texas are key growth areas for Katten and I am bringing a substantial client base to the firm, so we do anticipate building out the private wealth team in Dallas," Kevin told Global Legal Post.
"The entrepreneurial culture at Katten was also an attraction both in terms of its nimble approach to client service and as a partnership itself. The firm has a winning track record with laterals and is able to attract the type of talent that is conducive to servicing clients' needs with precision. As my practice continues to grow, that has become increasingly relevant," Kevin said.
