Parker F. Taylor, partner in Katten’s Private Wealth practice, was recently featured in a Citywealth Leaders List Q&A. The discussion covered Parker's role, the personal and technical planning issues facing clients, recent matters and pro bono work, and the qualities that define effective leadership.

Parker advises individuals and families on all aspects of estate planning, estate administration and estate litigation from Katten's New York and Miami offices. Parker noted that the practice focuses on helping clients develop comprehensive plans to manage and preserve their assets in the most tax-efficient way possible, while also guiding clients through intrafamily disputes, IRS audits, and the administration of large, complex estates and trusts. "In general, I work with individuals to navigate the complexities of life and their wealth," Parker said.

Regarding the challenges clients face, Parker observed that people often seek counsel during some of the most complicated and consequential moments in their lives, whether navigating the loss of a loved one, managing a significant family transition, anticipating a wealth realization event or determining how best to preserve and transfer wealth to the next generation. "My role is to bring clarity to those layered situations and help them make thoughtful, informed decisions," Parker said. He also described a significant part of the role as mentoring the team and ensuring that work is completed with the highest level of care and precision.

When asked about proudest professional achievements, Parker pointed to pro bono work assisting Holocaust survivors with their estate planning. "These individuals have endured the unimaginable and built meaningful lives in spite of it," Parker said. "It has been a privilege helping the survivors preserve their testamentary wishes, provide for their families and make sure their legacy is carried out."

Parker also strives to be a leader in his practice and identified what he believes are the most important attributes for a leader. "A great leader possesses understanding in the broadest sense of the word," Parker said, describing a leader who leads with confidence from the front when the moment demands it, yet has the humility to step aside when team members are capable. "Leadership is not about commanding others; it is about empowering them." Parker is certainly a leader worth watching.
