About Abigail J. Johansen

Abigail Johansen focuses her practice on complex commercial disputes, with an emphasis on business litigation, commercial real estate disputes and construction claims.

Strategic approach to complex commercial issues

She represents clients across a broad spectrum of industries in high-stakes matters involving contract disputes, business torts, partnership and shareholder disputes, construction defect claims, delay and impact claims, commercial lease disputes, and real estate development conflicts.

Abigail has extensive experience litigating matters in federal and state courts, as well as in the US District Courts for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA), the Western District of Virginia (WDVA), the District of Maryland and the District of Columbia. She also spends a substantial amount of time handling cases pending in Virginia state courts, including Fairfax, Loudoun, and Arlington counties, among others, as well as Maryland state courts and the DC Superior Court.

Outside the courtroom, Abigail handles numerous alternative dispute resolution matters, including arbitrations and mediations, pending in various venues.

Protecting technology for businesses

In addition to her core commercial and construction litigation practice, Abigail dedicates a portion of her work to intellectual property disputes, including copyright actions and trade secret misappropriation. She also has significant experience handling state-level privacy act disputes.

Commitment to community

Abigail dedicates time as a pro bono volunteer providing legal services, information and guidance through walk-in clinics in Washington, DC.

As a former Division I lacrosse player, Abigail leads an active lifestyle and is a member of the DC Barbell Club.

Before joining Katten, Abigail served as law clerk to the Judges of the Spotsylvania Circuit Court. While serving as a law clerk, she assisted in creating the Rappahannock Area Veterans Court Docket.

During law school, Abigail was a member of the Richmond Journal of Law and Technology and worked for a financial technology startup.
