Private Wealth partner Matthew Sperry spoke with Citywealth about his role as a private client lawyer representing ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals and families with investments in the United States.
Matthew discussed the most pressing legal issues he faces as a lawyer, including helping families navigate constantly changing global tax and regulatory environments. And he identified the one piece of legislation he would change if he could. While Matthew could cite a list, he said, "Certain penalties that US tax law imposes on clients that innocently fail to make certain tax filings are absolutely draconian in relation to the damage caused to the US government."
"Unfortunately, penalties like these are becoming the rule, rather than the exception, in jurisdictions throughout the globe," Matthew added.
Working out of London, Matthew works closely with clients in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Latin America and Canada on their private wealth matters and disputes in the United States.
