Law360 spoke with special counsel and Financial Markets and Regulation chair Gary DeWaal about the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) announcement last week that Dan Berkovitz has been hired to serve as the agency's general counsel. (Mr. Berkovitz previously served at general counsel of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) at the same time it was headed by current-SEC Chairman Gary Gensler.) Gary, also a CFTC alum, said the hiring of Mr. Berkovitz was "not on anyone's bingo card," but makes sense given his history with Mr. Gensler, musing that "perhaps this can be seen as the Gary and Dan 2021 reunion tour." He added, "Dan is likely one of the brightest lawyers in financial services. He will be a valuable batsman at the SEC."
