Intellectual Property Partner Terry Green, London Deputy Managing Partner, was quoted by multiple media outlets, including C21Media, the BBN Times, PA Media’s The Newswire and more, regarding The Office of Communications’ (Ofcom) measures under its Children’s Codes (Codes), announced on April 24 as part of the Online Safety Act. The guidelines, which Terry noted as a “pivotal moment for online safety in the [United Kingdom],” contain measures aimed at transforming how technology companies, such as social media platforms and search engines, protect young users from harmful online content.
“The 40 practical measures outlined by the regulator include much-needed steps to prevent children from encountering the most harmful context relating to the likes of self-harm, eating disorders, porn and suicide, while also protecting them from misogynistic, violent, hateful or abusive material, online bullying and dangerous challenges,” Terry commented in the article by C21Media. “The codes now demand a ‘safety-first’ approach when tech companies design and operate their [UK] services … [including] producing safer feeds, conducting effective age checks, taking fast action to tackle harmful content, giving children more choice and support in their online experience, making it easier to report and complain, and ensuring that strong governance is respected.”
In the BBN Times article, Terry stated, “The new codes demand accountability and proactive measures from platforms to ensure children’s well-being,” adding that “companies that embrace these measures proactively will not only comply with the law but also set a standard for responsible digital citizenship.”
