Numerous media outlets, including Bloomberg Law, Law360, Global Arbitration Review, and Reuters, reported on partner and International Arbitration chair Miriam Harwood's arrival at Katten. A recognized leader in international arbitration, Miriam will help launch a new practice for Katten in that space. She brings decades of cross-border experience in high-stakes disputes, including investor-state treaty arbitrations and international commercial arbitrations, as well as commercial litigation involving contract disputes, bankruptcy, intellectual property, securities fraud, and matters involving international law, sovereign immunity and enforcement of arbitral awards.
Among her many reasons for joining Katten, Miriam noted she was particularly excited to work again with some of her old colleagues from a prior firm. She recalled that she started her career as a litigator, and when she became a partner at Curtis in 2008, she devoted herself to building a new, dedicated international arbitration practice at the firm, expanding from a few high-profile cases for one sovereign State client into a globally renowned powerhouse. Drawing on this success and experience, she is once again devoting herself to this endeavor at Katten. She stated, "I've built this department before and [m]y former Curtis colleagues who are now at Katten incited excitement" about doing the same at Katten. "So here we go!" She said, "I've already started getting resumes that are coming in from people who love this stuff. It's a really unique area of law. There are people who live and breathe it. I feel like it's the most interesting area of law I've ever practiced."
Miriam also noted her admiration for New York managing partner Wendy Cohen. The two took a similar approach to building their legal careers, becoming high achieving attorneys in their respective fields after taking time away to raise children. "I stopped working in 1998 and took a career break for almost six years. I came back to Curtis in 2004, and I made partner in 2008. And then came this amazing opportunity where we built this [international arbitration] department that didn't exist before and became pretty famous internationally. Wendy Cohen has a similar story, and she went on to have a glorious career and becomes the managing partner at the New York office." Wendy had high praise for Miriam as well, calling her a "formidable attorney" and stating, "With her globally respected reputation and proven track record of success, Miriam is an exceptional leader who will focus on this high-profile practice at Katten, complementing its industry-leading practices across jurisdictions."
