WGN Radio's Let's Get Legal program spoke with Director of Pro Bono Services Jonathan Baum about Katten's legal clinic embedded in a public school in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood. The interview coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Katten Jose de Diego Legal Clinic, which Katten runs in partnership with Legal Aid Chicago.
Since its launch, the clinic has served more than 1,000 clients. On the show, Jonathan spoke about the genesis of the legal clinic and the variety of matters attorneys field, including immigration, public benefits, social security benefits, family law, housing, consumer disputes and criminal record expungement.
Jonathan noted that the monthly walk-in clinic accepts all comers. "We have a certain mission to try and support the community and the surrounding neighborhood but we actually get clients from all over the city," Jonathan said, adding that the clinic also works closely with the school because of its proximity. "The school is aware of our presence and what we are offering to the community and they get that message out. So, we often [serve] parents of students who face legal issues."
The type of legal support ranges from simple advice to extended representation, with an emphasis on empowering clients to be strong advocates for themselves.
