Health Care Associate Erica Youngerman interviewed attorney and breast cancer survivor Jennifer Feldman for an article in a special health issue of WILS Connect, a publication of the Women in Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. In the Q&A, Jennifer discussed her initial diagnosis and recurrence of breast cancer and how she managed her work, a move and the bar exam during treatments.
In a question Erica posed about personal and professional advice, Jennifer said she would tell any attorney newly diagnosed with breast cancer that the diagnosis isn't the end of the road for personal or professional dreams. "It is possible to find a balance between work and treatments — if you want to — but also, if you want to take a leave of absence and not work, that is okay too. For me, having distractions was very helpful. To keep my mind occupied and challenged, to have engaging discussions, to stick with a routine, was all instrumental in my ability to keep moving forward with a positive attitude. And, of course, find someone to talk to about what you are going through. Although friends and family want to be present and supportive, sometimes you need the perspective of someone who has already traveled down this road."
