Employment Litigation and Counseling senior associate Brigitte Weaver spoke with People Management regarding the proposed Workers (Predictable Terms and Conditions) Bill and what it might mean for labor shortages. Brigitte noted that as it stands, business have the "upper hand" on flexibility because zero-hours workers cannot predict shift availability. While lawmakers are hopeful the bill will "plug the current labor shortage," Brigitte is skeptical. "The commentary around this bill being 'game changing for the gig economy and zero-hours workers’ is perhaps an overstatement. It's absolutely crucial to note that this bill, if passed, provides only for the right to ask for a predictable working pattern and not the right to a predictable working pattern."
"'Tens of millions' of workers could request predictable working patterns under government-backed bill," People Management, February 8, 2023
