Gary DeWaal, special counsel in the Financial Services practice, will present "Distributed Ledger Technology: Is It Real or Hype?" session at the SIFMA's Securities Industry Institute (SII) 2019 Year 1 Program on Wednesday, March 6 at 12:30 p.m. Gary will address the evolution of cryptoassets and blockchain technology since the mining of the genesis bitcoin during January 2009. He will concentrate on current applications of blockchain technology; distinguish between decentralized and private ledgers, as well as proof of work vs. proof of stake and other consensus mechanisms; discuss the different types of digital tokens and their legal implications both in the United States and abroad; review pending legislative initiatives relevant to blockchain technology; and apply his crystal ball to the future. In his review, Gary will highlight current regulatory issues at both the CFTC and SEC.
